Specialized Training
EMDR
I have been trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for the treatment of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and other anxiety disorders. EMDR is a therapeutic treatment model, heavily researched since 1990, that desensitizes and reprocesses trauma. Eye movement facilitates this process which desensitizes the triggering effects of previous trauma experience.
I have been using EMDR for several years and find amazing results with most trauma related issues. Fewer sessions are needed, detailed reporting of details are not necessary, the person is relieved of the discomfort associated with the event, and the results remain stable over time. For further information regarding this treatment modality see: http://www.emdr.com/what-is-emdr/
Gottman Couple Therapy
While I use various theory models for treatment I heavily lean on Gottman Couple Therapy. Dr. John Gottman of the University of Washington has drawn from extensive research with healthy and failing couples. Assessment and treatment is based on skills learned from "master couples" in his research. For more information regarding Dr. Gottman's work: www.gottman.com/48994/Marriage--Couples.html
Health and Illness Dynamics
I have a special interest in families with chronic illness which comes from the integration of my medical-surgical nursing, marriage and family theray degree, and doctoral studies in this area. In addition I have a personal interest in the "cancer Journey" as I have experince with cancer as a patient and a careiver. An illness affects an individual, a couple and a family. the context of illness if often within the health care system which creates even more reltionship dynamic. My experience as a nurse, therapist and previous cancer patient and caregiver enhance my ability to guide others through the illness process and navegation of the health care system.
